• Restraint. Fewer pieces, better made, rather than a full matching set.
• Materials that age well here. Surfaces that withstand air conditioning, sunlight, and dust without looking tired in 2 years.
• Storage that swallows everything. The room stays calm because nothing is out on display.

Good luxury bedroom design is mostly those four things, with the budget going into construction and finish rather than decoration.

Start with the room, not the furniture

Measure before you shortlist anything. Put the room on paper: wall lengths, ceiling height, the swing of every door, the wardrobe fronts, the window positions and the air conditioning vents. Most bedroom furniture mistakes are measurement mistakes.

Leave room to walk. Allow comfortable walking space on both sides of the bed and at the foot, and remember that bedside drawers and wardrobe doors need clearance to open.

Villas and apartments need different thinking. Englander’s published warranty asks for a flat platform with proper centre support, or at least five rigid cross slats with a centre leg resting on the floor. Vispring sets different conditions for slatted bases, including a maximum gap between the slats and a mattress pad between the slats and the mattress. Both exclude damage caused by an unsuitable base, so check the terms for the mattress you are buying and settle the base before you order a frame.

Match bedside height to mattress height. This is the detail that separates a designed room from a furnished one. A bedside table should sit close to the top of the mattress, so a 30 cm mattress on a tall base needs a taller bedside piece than a low platform bed does.

• Fitted or freestanding. Fitted wardrobes use the full height and depth of a wall and suit apartments, where every centimetre counts. Freestanding pieces suit villas with generous walls, and they move with you.
• Ventilate what you store. In an air-conditioned home, a sealed wardrobe against an external wall can develop a different microclimate from the room. Leave a gap behind freestanding pieces and open the doors occasionally.
• Split storage by frequency. Daily items at arm height near the door or the dressing area, seasonal items high or deep.

The mattress is the piece not to compromise on

Everything else in the room is furniture. This is the part you lie on for a third of your life.

Light in layers. A bedroom needs three: general light for the room, task light at the bed for reading, and low light for the end of the evening. Bedside lights on dimmers do more for a bedroom than an expensive ceiling fitting on its own.

The Italian tradition leads with material and silhouette. Its strength is the expressive side of furniture: the shape of a headboard, the quality of an upholstery, hand finishing, and pieces meant to be looked at as objects.

The German tradition leads with engineering. Its strength is precision and systems: fitted storage that uses every millimetre, hardware and mechanisms designed to work for decades, and repeatable tolerances.

In practice, judge the piece, not the passport. Ask what the carcass is made of, how the drawers are jointed and how they run, whether the hardware is serviceable, and whether the finish can be repaired. Those answers separate good furniture from expensive furniture in any country.
