Queen or King? How to Decide for Your Bedroom

Measure the room before you weigh anything else. A king asks for roughly 30 cm more wall-to-wall width than a queen once the frame and both walkways are counted, and if your bedroom cannot surrender that, the queen vs king size question is already settled.

The trade, in one table

The decision is usually framed as two sizes, but a third exists. If the room is genuinely large, the super king at 200 x 200 cm gives a metre each and is still a size of bedding that is easy to buy for.

Note the per-sleeper row. One adult alone in a single bed has 90 cm of width. On a queen, two adults each get less room than that solo sleeper does.

King size vs queen size: which should couples choose?

Six questions, in order. The first firm no settles it.

  1. Does the room take a king? Measure wall to wall on the axis the bed sits across, then check against the table. Fall short, and the answer is queen, whatever else is true of your sleep.
  2. Do both of you sleep in it every night? If one side of the bed is rarely used, consider whether the extra width is worth the floor space it consumes.
  3. Does either of you move a lot? Width gives sleepers more physical separation, while mattress construction can also reduce how much movement transfers across the bed. In a pocket spring unit, for example, individually cased coils allow movement to stay more localised than in an interconnected spring system.
  4. Is there a meaningful weight difference between you? Firmness is relative to load, so the same mattress compresses further under the heavier sleeper. If partners differ significantly in weight, support and pressure relief may matter as much as additional width. Look for a mattress that supports the heavier sleeper while remaining comfortable for the lighter one.
  5. Does a child or a pet end up in the bed? If a third occupant joins regularly, the additional width of a king can provide more personal sleeping space for each adult.
  6. Can it physically get in? An 180 cm mattress will not bend. Take the lift's internal depth and its door width, then walk the route from the entrance to the bedroom looking for the narrowest corner. Roll-packed delivery clears gaps a flat one will not, so ask which applies before ordering.

Six questions for deciding between a Queen and King mattress based on room size, sleepers and delivery access

The more of questions two to five that apply to you, the stronger the case for the extra width, provided questions one and six both clear. Where they do not, the queen is the more practical choice and the floor space is worth keeping.

How to tell if you need a queen or a king mattress

Some of this you can test before spending a dirham.

Measure the width you already have. Lay a tape across your current bed. If you are on a 135 or 140 cm double, a queen already adds 10 to 15 cm, and jumping straight to a king may be more change than the problem requires.

Work out why your sleep is actually broken. If discomfort rather than lack of space is disturbing your sleep, changing mattress size may not address the underlying problem. A randomised, double-blind trial published in the Lancet in 2003 followed 313 adults with chronic non-specific low back pain on firm or medium-firm mattresses for 90 days and found better outcomes on pain and disability in the medium-firm group, although the study did not compare mattress sizes. Consider firmness, support, and the reason for your discomfort separately from bedroom width.

Check depth as well as width. A deeper mattress raises the finished height of the bed and needs a deeper fitted sheet pocket. Measure it against your frame sides before assuming a taller build is an upgrade.

Open every door with the bed in place. Wardrobe doors and drawers are the constraint people discover after delivery, and in a Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi apartment the fitted wardrobe usually takes more space than the floorplan suggests.

How to choose a queen size mattress in the UAE?

If the room has settled it, three things finish the queen decision.

At The Mattress Store, Queen is 150 x 200 cm. Buy bedding by the centimetre dimensions; under UK sizing, 150 x 200 cm is typically labelled King. Set firmness by sleeping position and weight rather than by what feels pleasant for thirty seconds in a showroom.

Base requirements vary by manufacturer. Englander's warranty, as one example, sets specific requirements for sprung mattresses, including appropriate support over slats and rigid central support carried to the floor.

The queen size collection carries the centimetre figure and firmness rating against every option.

The bedding cost nobody budgets for

Moving from queen to king usually means replacing dimension-specific items such as fitted sheets, protectors and toppers. Check duvet sizing separately, since it follows a different convention.

A protector is worth considering either way. Some manufacturers treat staining as grounds for invalidating warranty cover, and a breathable one also keeps the surface clean in a climate where fine dust settles into comfort layers.

Where this lands in a UAE bedroom?

Bedroom dimensions vary considerably across Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and built-in wardrobes can reduce the usable width shown on a floor plan. Larger rooms give you more flexibility to move up in size, while compact bedrooms may benefit more from preserving circulation and furniture space.

Queen and King bedroom layouts compared with walkway clearance and approximate wall-to-wall room width requirements

Measure rather than trust the plan. The drawing rarely accounts for the wardrobe doors and drawers you open every day, and a bed that fits the floor area can still leave a walkway too narrow to use comfortably.

For a guest room, the queen is almost always right. Guests are in the bed a few nights a year, and the reclaimed floor serves the room for the other fifty-one weeks. The same reasoning holds for a short lease, where a king is the least portable thing in the flat, and for any second bedroom carrying a desk or a wardrobe, where the furniture you open daily beats mattress width you notice occasionally.

Which should you buy?

Room around 310 cm or more, shared nightly. Consider 180 x 200 cm if it still leaves adequate walking space on the sides you use.

Room below that range. Consider 150 x 200 cm, since a king would compromise daily circulation.

Room around 330 cm or more, and space is the priority. Consider 200 x 200 cm if the room, base, and delivery route can all accommodate it.

Sleeping alone. 150 x 200 cm may already provide generous personal sleeping space, and the floor a smaller bed returns to the room is space you use every day rather than only at night.

Before you order

  1. Measure the room wall to wall on the axis the bed sits across.
  2. Subtract the frame footprint and confirm a usable walkway each side you use.
  3. Work through the six questions above.
  4. Measure the frame internally, at the base, both dimensions.
  5. Check the base carries a solid board over any slats and a centre leg to the floor.
  6. Budget the bedding step-up alongside the mattress.
  7. Measure the lift, the door width and the tightest corner on the route.

Seven-step checklist for measuring a bedroom and choosing between a Queen and King mattress before ordering

Where to go from here

The queen vs king size decision is settled by a tape measure far more often than by preference. Measure wall to wall, subtract the frame, keep your walkways, and only then ask whether you will use the extra 30 cm.

Since the size you order is the size you keep, lying on both is worth the trip. Our showrooms list locations across the Emirates, and the Sharjah showroom in City Centre Al Zahia has the sizes side by side if that is your nearest. To narrow it down first, the queen and king collections both carry the centimetre figure and firmness rating against every option.

Frequently asked questions

Is a king size mattress worth it over a queen?

It is worth it if the room can spare the width and you share the bed nightly, particularly if either of you moves at night or a child joins you. It is not worth it if the extra 30 cm comes out of a walkway you use daily, or if one side is usually empty.

How much bigger is a king than a queen in the UAE?

Thirty centimetres of width, with identical length on both. Split between two sleepers that come to 15 cm each, which is the difference most couples notice when one of them is restless. A king gives 90 cm per person against 75 cm on a queen.

Can a king size bed fit in an apartment bedroom?

It can, depending on the usable room width, furniture placement and walking clearance. Measure wall to wall and allow for the bed frame, wardrobes and circulation rather than relying on the floor plan. Compare the result against roughly 310 to 350 cm.

Should I choose a bigger mattress or better firmness?

It depends on the problem you are trying to solve. Extra width can help with personal sleeping space and partner disturbance, while firmness and support affect how the mattress responds to your body. The Lancet trial cited above compared firmness levels, not mattress sizes.
