• Handcrafted, natural filled. The fillings are laid by hand rather than blown in, and the layers are secured with hand tufting. Wool, cotton, and horsehair sit in place of, or above, foam. These are the mattresses built to be serviced and rotated for years rather than replaced on a cycle, and the hand work is part of what you are paying for.
• Engineered premium. Pocket spring systems paired with engineered foams, built to a specification rather than by hand. The materials and the construction are the cost, and the result is a different feel rather than a lesser one.
• Specification before purchase. Some constructions in this tier are made after you buy, to the size and specification agreed, which is why the specification conversation can matter more than a showroom lie-down.

Neither route is the luxury one. They suit different buyers, and the useful question is "which of the two you are actually comparing.

Start with size, because large rooms can take more

This is where a villa or penthouse bedroom differs most from an apartment, and it is the decision that cannot be changed later without changing the bed frame too.

Wider still in the main range. If you want a 210 x 220 Gulf emperor or a 215 x 215 Wyoming king, those exist elsewhere in the catalogue rather than in the luxury collection, so check which models are available in them before you settle on a size.

Before you choose the largest that fits, check two things. First, the walking space left on both sides and at the foot, since a bed that fills a room makes a large bedroom feel small. Second, the bedding. Sheets, duvets and protectors in emperor and Wyoming sizes are a smaller market than standard king, so confirm you can buy them in the finish you want before the mattress is made.

Depth changes more than you expect

Luxury constructions vary in depth, and depth has consequences beyond looks. In the luxury collection, the heights run from 21 cm to 33 cm. Elsewhere in the range mattresses go up to around 42 cm, so compare the actual figure rather than assuming the dearer bed is the deeper one.

• Fitted sheets need the pocket depth to match. A deep mattress with standard sheets will pull the corners off during the night.
• The finished bed height is mattress plus base. A deep mattress on a tall base can be hard to get into and out of, which matters more for guest rooms used by older visitors than for your own.
• Doming is separate from depth. Some hand-built mattresses are specified with a crown on top, quoted separately from the overall depth. Read the two figures together rather than comparing one against another mattress’s total.

The base is part of the purchase, not an afterthought

• Manufacturers set requirements. Our warranty terms require a flat platform with proper centre support, or at least five rigid cross slats with a centre leg resting firmly on the floor, and exclude damage caused by an improper base. Individual makers add their own conditions on top.
• Match the base to the construction. A hand-built sprung mattress behaves differently on a sprung base than on a solid platform, and the maker will have a view on which is intended.

Two people, one bed

• Measure the route, not the room. Lift internal dimensions, lift door width and height, stairwell turns, corridor width, and every door frame on the way.
• Ask how the mattress arrives. Deep hand-built mattresses are usually delivered flat and cannot be bent or folded. Our warranty terms are explicit that bending a mattress can permanently damage the spring unit and that such damage is excluded. A single emperor mattress can be a four-person carry.
• Ask what happens if it does not fit. Agree that in advance, particularly for a made-to-order piece, because it will not be a change-of-mind return.
• Plan for the base as well. It is often the more awkward item, especially on a staircase.

Several bedrooms, not one

A villa usually means a main bedroom, guest rooms and sometimes staff accommodation, and treating them identically wastes money.

Specify each room by how it will be used, by who will sleep in it and by the budget for it, rather than by what the room is called. A guest room slept in for weeks a year by the same relative is a different brief from one used by different visitors a few nights a year.

Where you do not know who will use a room, avoid a highly specialised firmness. A specification tuned to one person’s preference is the one most likely to suit nobody else in the house.

Specify the sizes together. Ordering the main bedroom and the guest rooms in one conversation keeps the bedding consistent and the delivery to one visit.

Protecting it from the first night

At this level, the mattress will outlast several sets of bedding, but only if it is looked after from the start.

• Use a protector immediately. Our warranty terms state that stains of any kind invalidate the warranty, so this is not optional on a mattress at this price.
• Rotate to the maker’s instructions, not to a household habit. Some constructions rotate head to foot, some are two-sided and are also turned, and the interval varies.
• Keep the paperwork together. The specification sheet, the care instructions and the warranty terms belong in one place, because a claim years later will ask for all three.

Ten minutes in a showroom cannot tell you how a mattress sleeps, but it can rule things out.
